Nanoscience and Nanotechnology: EPSRC CDT (MRes + Ph.D.)

The University of Cambridge offers Master of Research (MRes) and Ph.D. The vision of the MRes+ Ph.D. is to provide modified training in vital nanoscience and nanotechnology to convert exploratory nanoscience into impactful technologies and encourage new interdisciplinary interactions. The MRes year renders excellent advanced-level training through lecture courses, and hands-on practical and experimental projects (two short and one longer), before the final selection of interdisciplinary Ph.D. research projects. The research groups may be from the Departments of Chemistry, Engineering, Physics, Materials Science, or another relevant department across the University.
The program also caters to professional skills training and cohort-based activities in the MRes year and the Ph.D. phase. In addition, various events complement formal training in science communication during the MRes year throughout the program, such as conferences led by students, onsite and offsite research, research seminars, career development workshops headed by internal and external experts, and other activities.

Study areas:

  • Chemistry
  • Physics
  • Materials Science
  • Engineering

About the program:
During the MRes year, students complete the following elements:

  1. Science Courses (interdisciplinary research in nanoscience and nanotechnology covering topics that include characterization techniques, nanofabrication techniques, nano self-assembly, nanophysics and -chemistry, bionanotechnology, nano-materials, and others).
  2. Practical, Projects, and Ph.D. Proposal: The practicals conducted during the first term provides hands-on experience in a range of techniques like AFM, Optical microscopy, Confocal microscopy, Super-resolution microscopy, Intro to Python programming, Intro to HPC, Intro to COMSOL, Microfluidics, e-beam lithography, Nanoscribe two-photon lithography, Nanocrystal Batch Synthesis, Luminescent QD device fabrication & measurement, Time-Correlated Single Photon Counting, 2D Material Growth, and Characterisation Raman spectroscopy, R2R Nanoimprint, Intro to Chem Eng (+startups site visit), Nanoparticle Flow Synthesis and Characterisation, Electrochemistry, DLS and iScat microscopy, Biological sample prep and characterization, SEM and EDS, He-ion microscopy + FIB, High-Resolution TEM, Multidimensional Data Analysis in Electron Microscopy, x-ray diffraction, Cathodoluminescence, CAD, 3D printing and making diagrams
  3. Innovation and Professional Skills Training: Training them to integrate new nano-materials and -devices into systems and commercializing early-stage technologies is a vital part of the NanoDTC program.

During the Ph.D. phase:

  1. The students will get to work on the core Ph.D. project, Student-led conferences, Research seminars, Onsite and offsite research and career development workshops, and Science communication and outreach activities (e.g., school visits, science festivals, social media).
  2. The fellows will have hands-on experience in computing and data analysis, including curating, analyzing, and interpreting data, machine learning, and using simulation tools to make theory-experiment links.
  3. Enhanced exposure to innovation and entrepreneurship

Requirements:

  • Applicants must have obtained a UK First class Honours degree in a relevant discipline, viz., physics, chemistry, materials, or engineering sciences.
  • Language Requirement: IELTS (Academic) 7.0; TOEFL Internet Score 100
